5/21/2023 0 Comments Past Caring by Robert Goddard![]() ![]() ![]() The plot’s incorporation of a little-known pre-World War I constitutional crisis, the Suffragette movement (which neatly fits in with the women’s movement of the seventies), and well-paced twists makes Past Caring an entertaining page-turner. This reprint of Goddard’s debut novel unfolds in the early part of the twentieth century and late seventies and has maintained a graceful sense of both eras. Radford’s own blunders will unfold on this journey as he investigates Strafford’s past in this blended mix of politics, romance and historical thriller. Martin Radford is a floundering, unemployed historian with a dim future who jumps at the chance to research the memoirs of Edwin Strafford, a young Edwardian cabinet minister and contemporary of Churchill and Lloyd George with a promising career that went mysteriously astray. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Burnout the secret to unlocking![]() ![]() Instead of asking us to ignore the very real obstacles and societal pressures that stand between women and well-being, they explain with compassion and optimism what we’re up against-and show us how to fight back. Considering this is aimed at middle readers who are just starting to broaden their reading horizons into more complex books, that can be an issue. I'm writing about actual incorrect word choice. I'm not talking about simple misspellings and such that Word or a cursory glance by someone other than the author would catch. Or more specifically, the lack of editing. That said, why did this book get three stars? Pure and simple: the writing. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in the series, as I have to know what Andy does next! I am also a fan of the lessons to be learned by the readers, knowing this book is targeted for middle grade readers (5th to 7th grade, I would presume).
